With Steve Newman and All in One

Nieu Bethesda Guitar CampOver the weekend of the 12 – 14 of July 2013, @Nieu-Bethesda is hosting the inaugural Great Karoo Guitar Camp, with Steve Newman and All In One, featuring the talents of Errol Dyers, one of the originators of the sound that has become known as Cape Jazz, and internationally renowned multi-instrumentalist, Hilton Schilder.

All in One was formed when these three South African musical icons, first shared the stage in an improvised session at the Ubuntu Festival held to celebrate the 91st birthday of Nelson Mandela in 2009. These three aural conjurors have since recorded an album of the same title and taken audiences on a musical journey stretching from the slopes of Table Mountain to the heart of the Kalahari and, now, to the Great Karoo, reflecting the quiet refrain of days gone by touched by strains of joy and reflection.

The quaint Karoo hamlet of Nieu-Bethesda has, over the past few decades, developed a reputation as the home of Outsider Art in South Africa, with Helen Martins’ world renowned Owl House drawing both local and international visitors.

More recently the village has hosted some of this country’s top musical talent, who have lent their voices to the growing opposition against plans by government to allow a controversial new form of mining known as hydraulic fracturing. Fracking threatens to contaminate the Karoo’s precious underground water supply, effectively destroying the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of already marginalized inhabitants. It was through his support for this cause that Steve Newman performed the first anti-fracking fund raiser here in 2011.

The cost of the 2013 Great Karoo Guitar Camp is R1600. This includes the workshops, the meet-and-greet potjiekos and free entry for the workshop participants to the All In One concert on the Friday night. (Please note that additional meals and accommodation are not included in this amount).

When booking via email or telephone, all participants receive a 10% discount on the accommodation rates listed www.nieu-bethesda.com.

Meal options are either self-catering or full board at R320, covering breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast and lunch on the Sunday.

The musicians will present three parallel sessions on Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Every participant will therefore have the opportunity to work with each musicians, who will cover tricks and techniques, as well as an introduction to harmony, scales and chords.
