Following the tradition of Helen Martins, there are several artists who have found their muse in Nieu Bethesda and established their studios in the village. Albert RedelinghuysAlbert Redelinghuys is a Gauteng escapee who settled in Nieu Bethesda. He is not only an artist, but a designer too. He spends his days in Nieu Bethesda tending his ‘Maze and Labryinth” and painting realistic Karoo landscapes and still life painting. Albert has won several awards for his work and also spent 3 months in residence at the Cites Arts in Paris in 2000. David LangmeadDavid Langmead is a Zimbabwean expat resettled in Nieu Bethesda. His youth spent observing wildlife gives him inspiration for his life-like wildlife paintings. These days, he also finds his muse in the treeless landscape beyond his backyard in Nieu Bethesda. David is now also renowned for his landscapes. Charmaine HainesCharmaine Haines creates abstract and stylised ceramic art. She creates both sculptural and utilitarian forms and embellishes them with semi-reliefs, coloured stains, natural oxide washes, carvings and textures. Frans Boekkooi"My sculptures feed off the nostalgia of innocent times, lost in thought or activity. Sometimes they even embody the thoughts or pictures born in a moment – but every piece has meaning. To me, at least, they speak.” |
