J.P. Pienaar for ₤4000. Plots were sold off to interested parties and the Dutch Reformed congregation was established in 1878. The first minister, Ds. H.F. Schoon, was appointed in 1882. Services were initially held in the house of Mr B.J. Pienaar and later his old wagon house was converted into a church and then into the church hall, eventually falling into disuse. Now renovated, this building is available for group accommodation, weddings, conferences, workshops, exhibitions, etc. The Old Church can accommodate up to 120. It has a well-equipped kitchen for mass catering. Pets are welcome by arrangement. In it's previous life it was, amongst other things, a Nieu Bethesda home, a shop and Clive Laurence's sculpture studio, “The Rusty Lizard”. Some of Clive's original works remain in the Zen-inspired, walled garden. The working windmill feeds an old cement reservoir, handy for a refreshing dip on hot summer afternoons spent relaxing in Nieu Bethesda. Lying in the heart of Nieu Bethesda, Aandster has 3 bedrooms (one in the garden), one bathroom with a shower and a bath, a spacious open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen area and a private garden with a braai and swing for the kids. Depending on the season you can light a fire in the woodburner in the lounge or sunbathe in the walled garden. Crisp cotton linen keeps you cool in summer and woollen duvets and mohair blankets warm winter nights. Karoo Lavender toiletries perk up your shower. Aandster can accommodate up to 12 guests. Take with a dip with the goldfish in the dam, hire bikes to explore Nieu Bethesda or hike in the surrounding Sneeuberg Mountains. Make day trips to the Mountain Zebra National Park and The Valley of Desolation or guided San rock art and fossil tours. Catch up with the outside world every now and then on the internet... Sip sundowners in the garden, watching the sky light up with stars, or curl up next to the wood-burner, enjoying the carefully selected backpackers' wines. Treat yourself to the home-made bread and cottage cheese while braaing some delicious Nieu Bethesda Karoo lamb. If you don't fancy cooking, Ian and Katrin, your well-travelled hosts, can provide breakfast, a packed lunch and/or dinner from locally produced meat and veggies, or point you to the best eateries around town. They will pick you up or drop you off in Graaff-Reinet for R100, and you can buy your bus tickets from them. Environmentally conscious, the Owlhouse Backpackers is the one of the few establishments in Nieu Bethesda making use of solar geysers, compost toilets and grey water recycling. All rubbish is separated and as much as possible composted on site. The Owlhouse Backpackers can accommodate 80 guests. Pets are welcome by arrangement.
