For anyone seeking the glitz and glamour of a five-star holiday destination, I can only sympathize with your limited horizons.
I recently arrived in Nieu Bethesda for an extended sabbatical. A long-time fan of Nieu-Bethesda, Stef Porter stopped by to check out what’s new – and not! Not that much has changed in Nieu-Bethesda since a group of local farmers got together in 1875 and petitioned to set up a church closer than the one in Graaff-Reinet (then a sevenhour ride away). If you ask residents why their town remains undeveloped, they’ll most probably tell you it’s because of critical mass; there just aren’t the numbers to support even small changes, much less major infrastructural ones.
Visitors to the Fugard Festival in Nieu Bethesda from 1 to 4 October 2009 are set for a treat of rare occurrence: to enjoy the theatre of Athol Fugard in the setting that originally inspired the dramatist. Fugard Festival-goers will be able to view extracts from The Road to Mecca, by Yvonne Batista, who received the highest award and great praise from the adjudicators for her role as Helen Martins at the SA Guild of Speech and Drama Eisteddfod in Port Elizabeth last year.
