With Steve Newman and All in One

Over the weekend of the 12 – 14 of July 2013, @Nieu-Bethesda is hosting the inaugural Great Karoo Guitar Camp, with Steve Newman and All In One, featuring the talents of Errol Dyers, one of the originators of the sound that has become known as Cape Jazz, and internationally renowned multi-instrumentalist, Hilton Schilder.

All in One was formed when these three South African musical icons, first shared the stage in an improvised session at the Ubuntu Festival held to celebrate the 91st birthday of Nelson Mandela in 2009. These three aural conjurors have since recorded an album of the same title and taken audiences on a musical journey stretching from the slopes of Table Mountain to the heart of the Kalahari and, now, to the Great Karoo, reflecting the quiet refrain of days gone by touched by strains of joy and reflection.

The 'Voice' whips off dress shirt to reveal anti-fracking T-shirt

WHEN Vusi Mahlasela took to the stage in the quaint Bohernian town of Nieu-Bethesda, he had a strong message for his audience: put an end to plans for fracking in the Karoo. About 400 people, made up of visitors, townsfolk, local artisans and farm workers gathered to hear the legendary South Alrican artist and struggle icon perform. The artist, known to his fans simply as "The Voice", could not have expected a more diverse or appreciative audience.

Steve Newman and Greg Georgiades will be performing at the Old Church Hall on Saturday the 28 July as part of their "The Very Live Tour" in support of the Karoo anti-fracking forum. Together these two consummate performers are known for their dynamic harmonies and melodic adventures that have transported audiences across the length and breadth of the country on a spicy, sonic journey of rhythmical delight that is sure to leave you thrilled and rejuvenated. For anyone seeking the glitz and glamour of a five-star holiday destination, I can only sympathize with your limited horizons.

I recently arrived in Nieu Bethesda for an extended sabbatical. I was traveling from Cape Town and with each passing kilometer the angst and stresses of urban living were gradually shed and replaced with the anticipation of settling into a new space and the excitement of starting work on my debut novel.

Good news for all - the road into Nieu Bethesda off the N9 at Wellwood Farm has recently been tarred all the way into town. It's now easier and quicker to get here. This road is 27km north of Graaff-Reinet and is an interesting drive.

Nieu Bethesda will be hosting the second Fugard Festival from the 23-36 September. Not only will Nieu Bethesda introduce a unique STREET ART competition in the village, but theatre and Fugard lovers will have the opportunity to attend no fewer than 5 Fugard plays all in one festival.
