Nieu Bethesda Accommodation

The Water Tower

Enquire now Enquire nowA circular double-storey with an interesting past, the Water Tower sits in a
pleasant garden in the heart of Nieu Bethesda. This quirky building was first
a water tower and then a Buddhist meditation room. With whitewashed walls and
wooden floors, it is a calm and clean space from which to enjoy the famous
Karoo sky, day or night.
The Water Tower sleeps two on a queen-size bed in the room upstairs adjoining
the sun/stardeck. The kitchenette is below with the private shower and composting
toilet attached.
Do some stargazing on the deck before creeping under your crisp cotton sheets,
lamb’s wool duvets and mohair blanket.
The Water Tower can accommodate 2 guests.
Pets are welcome by arrangement.

Hard to leave

I spent three nights in the water tower in the snuggiest bed I’ve ever slept in, complete with hot water bottles (not needed) and optional cat. The cat was one of several that belong to the Owl House Backpackers. They don’t come in uninvited, so those uncomfortable with, or allergic to, cats need not worry. (Surfaces in the tower are easily and frequently cleaned.) What a treat to crawl into my bed, a purring cat at my feet, after sitting on my private deck gazing at the stars. The kitchenette is small, but well stocked with all the equipment you need to prepare a meal, and the dining table did double duty as a writing desk. I had my worries about the attached bathroom, but they proved totally unfounded. There was nothing rustic about it; the shower was pristine and steaming. Ian and Katrin are wonderful hosts, sharing scenic walking routes, tips about the best time to visit the Owl House, and local lore. I could easily have stayed three more nights.
